Vacation Station

Summer 2008

Vacation Station is a project of MPTV’s Outreach Services. It encourages children aged six to twelve to make the best use of their summer vacation. A popular activity magazine is published and distributed free of charge to children at libraries, recreation centers and youth-serving community organizations in southeastern Wisconsin.

Children are invited to become members of the Vacation Station Action Club by completing the registration card inside the magazine and mailing it to Milwaukee Public Television. Programs in the MPTV-36 lineup are selected to pique the interests of children looking for worthwhile entertainment during their summer break. Art, book review and riddle contests encourage children’s active participation.

Enter Vacation Station Contests

Art Contests:

• Participants must be aged 6-12
• Art must be original and done by one person only
• Size: Minimum of 8-1/2” x 11” and a maximum of 11” x 14”
• Media: No restrictions. Be imaginative! (The use of color is encouraged.)
• Theme: Bugs, Butterflies and Backyard Fun! Create a picture of colorful bugs or butterflies—real or imagined. Or, create a picture of your favorite backyard activity, such as, playing ball, jumping in the leaves, reading under a tree, having a picnic, splashing in the pool, building a snow fort.
• Include your name, age, full address, phone number and title of your art work on the back of your picture.
• Deadline for Entries: Friday, August 29, 2008

• Judging: A Panel of judges will select winners on the basis of originality, quality of the work and age considerations. There will be a first, second and third place winner in each of the following three categories: ages 6 to 8: ages 9 and 10; ages 11 and 12. Honorable Mentions may also be given in one or more of the age categories.
• Winners will be notified by phone by the end of September, 2008. the names of the winners will be posted on www.mptv.org by the end of October, 2008.
• Prizes: Everyone who enters will receive a letter of appreciation and a small thank you item. The artists chosen by our judges will receive a merchandise certificate from Artist and Display, a children’s pass for a visit to the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum, four books and other surprises. Winning pictures will be taped and will air on Milwaukee Public Television between children’s shows by the end of October 2008 through May, 2008.
• No royalties will be paid at this or any time.

Book Review Contest

• Everyone who registers for a Vacation Station Action Kit will receive a book review form.
• Members aged 6-12 who send us their completed form will be eligible for a drawing for two free books and some surprise gifts. (Only one book review entry per person.)
• Deadline for Entries: Friday, August 29, 2008
• Mailing instructions can be found on the book review form.
• Winners will be notified in September, 2008 and their prizes will be sent in the mail. The names of the winners will be posted on the web at www.mptv.org by the end of October, 2008. The lessons learned from the reviewed books may be posted on the web as well.
• All book reviews become the property of VACATION STATION and will not be returned.

Riddles & Jokes Contest

Do you have a funny riddle or joke to share? Please select your best one and mail it to us. Children aged twelve and under are eligible to enter.

Our jolly panel of judges will choose the best of the best and post them on www.mptv.org with your name and age. If your joke or riddle is chosen, we’ll send you some fun stickers and surprise gifts in the mail.
