Garden Tips

Melinda’s Tips

WATER

Over-watering is a common mistake.  Most gardeners kill their plants with kindness.  Don't make that mistake.  Always water thoroughly but only when the top few inches of soil are slightly damp and crumbly.

PESTS

Stop! Don't reach for the pesticide.  Most insects are good guys helping your garden grow and flourish.  Consider removing damaging insects by hand, with a strong blast of water, or waiting for other insects, birds and nature to keep them under control.

COMPOSTING

Save time and money by converting your green debris into gardener's gold--compost.  It's as simple as mixing a little soil, pest-free plant materials, and fallen leaves, placing in a heap, giving an occasional turn and letting it rot.  Soon you will have compost for your gardeners, containers and transplants.

PERENNIALS

Add a few perennials to the garden for year-round beauty.  The foliage and flowers provide color and interest from spring through fall.  Leave seed heads and grasses stand to attract birds and provide winter interest throughout our long Great Lakes winters.

HERBS

Add fragrance and texture to the garden while spicing up your family's meals.  Herbs make great additions to the perennial plantings, annual flowerbeds, and container gardens.  Select plants that tolerate the growing conditions, add beauty, and that your family will like to eat.
