Legends of Jazz With Ramsey Lewis
"Contemporary Jazz"

#104H
APT
Lee Ritenour, Marcus Miller, and George Duke have played together in the past, but in this episode they perform with energy and creativity, as though they had been playing together for years. Master guitarist and contemporary jazz legend Lee Ritenour, keyboardist George Duke, and the phenomenal bassist/producer Marcus Miller perform together and share the musical progressions that led to the creation of the various sub-genres called "contemporary jazz." The trail ranges from the soul/R&B/funk inflected jazz beginning in the late 1950s, into the '60s, with artists such as Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, and Ramsey Lewis; the creation of Rock Fusion in the late 60s and into the 1970s, by artists like Miles Davis, Weather Report, and Chick Corea; the melding of pop and jazz in the 1980s, with artists such as Spyro Gyra, the Yellowjackets, and Lee himself, and on into the Smooth Jazz era that characterizes much of contemporary jazz.

After first exploring, and then passing through, the little-known border town of Sasabe, AZ, a journey is taken to a mission in Northwestern Mexico. Labeled by locals as "Heroic Caborca," this mission actually was used as a fortress by the townspeople to successfully defend their town from an invading militia from the U.S. in the 1800s. To this day, bullet holes in the walls convey vivid evidence of battle. Along the way, a rare, sensational spring wildflower display is enjoyed; and evidence is examined of prior human habitation in the form of petroglyphs.

Home for Unwed Mothers: The only clue a Kansas City, MO, resident has of the identity of her parents is a medallion of the Virgin Mary that was attached to her diaper when she was presented for adoption. The Detectives help her find her birth parents. Long Expedition Encampment: Along the Missouri River, archaeologists are digging an encampment from the 1819 "Long Expedition," which took place 16 years after Lewis and Clark's. Long, the first to be accompanied by scientists, could be considered the more significant voyage. Detectives determine the authenticity of archaeological discoveries. Evelyn Nesbit Portrait: A lost masterpiece may be by illustrator and artist Howard Chandler Christy, of model/actress Evelyn Nesbit, who came to fame in 1906, when her husband killed an architect accused of "taking advantage" of her. Detectives reveal conclusions about art history, "Gilded Age" scandals, and ideals of female beauty.

UFA Light: An antique Kaschie lighter with an engraving, "Harry Warner," on one side; and "Ufatone" on the other, may reveal some history. Harry Warner is one of the Warner brothers of the studio that produced movies aimed at garnering support for America's entry into World War II. Ufa was Germany's largest studio. What is the connection between Harry Warner, known for his anti-fascist commitment, and a studio that became the propaganda tool of the Nazi party? The ranger for the 15,000-acre Great Park of Windsor Castle is none other than the Duke of Edinburgh. With more than 50 years of service, Prince Philip is the longest-serving ranger in the castle's history. The grounds have a pageantry of their own. The greatest event in the British polo calendar, Cartier International Day, takes place on the stunning grounds. This year the star attraction is Prince Harry, who leads the royal team. And what can be grander than a royal wedding, as Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles celebrate their nuptials at Windsor Castle? With 35,000 daffodils, 19,500 canapes, over 2,000 well-wishers, and 800 guests for the prayer and dedication at St. George's Chapel, the staff is hard at work. As far as Prince Philip is concerned, though, his main duty as ranger is to be a custodian for the future. The real strength of Windsor Castle will always lie in its people. Final program of 3.

"Alice Waters and Her Delicious Revolution"
00:56
#1604Z
(Rpt)
PBS
Alice Waters, from Berkeley, CA, rocked the world of food in the late 1970s by preparing a simple lunch--roasted garlic, grilled spring lamb, a salad of baby mixed greens and a peach--for an elite culinary gathering. French chef Henri Charvet sniffed, "Zhat is not cooking. Zhat is shopping!" Despite his opinion, Waters created a "delicious revolution." She and her now-famous restaurant, Chez Panisse, became a major force behind the way people think about food, launching the explosion of farmers' markets, and redesigning produce departments. She planted organic gardens at inner-city schools, at a state prison, and at the Clinton White House. She has taken her flawless palette and gift for food and turned it into consciousness about the environment and nutrition--and a device for social change. Waters is followed through a year of seasons, each ending with a glorious meal--and shares the recipes and vision of an artist and activist.
