The construction of the buildings was supervised by an officer who became one of the Union Army's greatest generals. Could this have been the home of General Philip Sheridan? Oregon's Jack Ainsworth Mills has a watch that may have been a gift to his grandfather from American author Samuel Clemens, known as Mark Twain. Mills has wondered how his grandfather, Captain Ainsworth, could have met Clemens. And a Revolutionary War poem is found in an antique trunk in Salem, OR; it appears to be from American Dan Goodhue, while imprisoned in 1780 as a POW in England. How did the letter travel there? Feiler travels from the great temple of Karnak in Luxor, formerly ancient Thebes, to the pyramids and sphinx of Giza, to the royal burial tombs in the Valley of the Kings. As he treks by camel, boat, horseback, and foot, he discovers how the ancient Egyptian culture and religion influenced the Israelites during their centuries-long stay in Egypt. Beginning at the shallow waters of the Nile, Feiler retraces the story of one of the Bible's greatest figures, Moses, and his eventual confrontation with the Pharaoh, and the command to let his people go.
